Description

Syracuse. Tetradrachm circa 460-450, AR 17.07 g. Charioteer, holding kentron in r. hand and reins in both, driving slow quadriga r.; above, Nike flying r., crowning horses with open wreath held in both hands. In exergue, ketos r. Rev. Σ – V – RAKOΣ – I – ON Head of Arethusa r., wearing pearl taenia, single-pendant earring, and necklace; around, four dolphins. Rizzo pl. XXXVII, 1 (this reverse die). SNG Lockett 923 (this reverse die). SNG ANS 144 (these dies). Boehringer 469. Rare. An exceptional example of transitional style struck on exceptionally fresh metal and large flan. Magnificent iridescent tone, almost invisible traces of overstriking on reverse, otherwise good extremely fine Ex M&M 52, 1975, 82; Leu 42, 1987, 115 and Sotheby’s 5th July 1995, Two Hundred Highly Important Greek and Roman Coins, 24 sales.
