Piakos. Hemilitra work of the ”Maestro della foglia” circa 410, Æ 4.74 g. Laureate head of young river-god l.; to l., Π – I – A – K – I – N interspaced with six pellets. Rev. Hound dragging down hind to r. and biting its neck; in l. field, acorn, to r., leaf. Jenkins, AIIN Supplemento 20, Enna etc., p.92 and pl. 7, 2a. C. Boehringer, AIIN Supplemento 25, p. 165, 1. AMB 396 (this coin). Calciati 1. Very rare, one of the very few specimens of this coin with an old pedigree. An issue of fine style and work of a skilled master engraver, brown tone and good very fine / about extremely fine Ex NAC sale 13, 1998, formerly exhibited at the Antikenmuseum Basel, 396 and Freeman & Sear Fixed Price List 2007, 644. From the A.D.M. collection. Rizzo presumes this rare issue to be the first ascribable to the “Maestro della Foglia”, who was also active in Catana and whose trademark was often a leaf.
