Description

Gela. Didrachm circa 490-475 BC, AR 8.55 g. Naked and helmeted rider on prancing horse r., wielding spear in raised r. hand, l. arm behind horse’s mane, holding reins. Rev. CE – ΛΑ Forepart of man-headed bull r. Boston 241 (this obverse die). Kraay-Hirmer pl. 55, 156 (these dies). Jenkins 28 (O9/R11). Light iridescent tone, traces of overstriking, otherwise extremely fine Ex M&M 54, 1978, 87 and M&M 72, 1987, 505 sales.
