Description

Catana. Drachm signed by Euainetos circa 405 BC, AR 4.09 g. Fast quadriga driven r. by charioteer, holding kentron and reins; above, Nike flying l. to crown him. Rev. Diademed head of river-god Amenanos l.; at either side, two fish and below chin, crayfish. Beneath neck truncation, EYAI. Rizzo pl. XIV, 7 (this obverse die). SNG Lloyd 902 (these dies). AMB 335 (this obverse die). Very rare. Of superb style and with a fine old cabinet tone, surface somewhat porous and a light scratch on reverse, otherwise about extremely fine Ex Sotheby’s 5 April 1974, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 127; NFA V, 1978, 29 and Christie's June 1993, McLendon, 17 sales.
