Lucania, Metapontum. Nomos circa 290-280, AR 7.91 g. Diademed head of Heracles r., lion’s skin tied around neck and club over l. shoulder. Rev. META Ear of barley with leaf to r., on which kantharos; beneath leaf, B[I]. Kraay-Hirmer pl. 85, 248 (these dies). Johnston-Noe D4.3. Historia Numorum Italy 1621. Rare. Of superb style and with a lovely old cabinet tone. Minor area of weakness on obverse, otherwise extremely fine Privately purchased from Jean Vinchon Numismatique in the mid 90’s.
