Description

Calabria, Tarentum. Nomos circa 470-425, AR 7.83 g. Phalantus on dolphin l., r. arm outstretched, holding Boeotian shield; beneath, cockle-shell. Rev. Oecist seated l. on stool, holding spindle in r. hand and aryballos in l. Vlasto 243. SNG ANS 859 (these dies). Fischer-Bossert 275f (this coin). Historia Numorum Italy 844. Very rare and in unusually good condition for the issue. Wonderful old cabinet tone, weakly struck and slightly off-centre on obverse, otherwise good very fine / about extremely fine Ex Leu Fixed Price List 1960, 45 and LHS sale 100, 2007, 38. From the R.
