Description

Coele-Syria, Chalcis ad Libanum, Cleopatra VII and Mark Antony, Ae 22mm, dated 32/31 BC, draped and diademed bust of Cleopatra right, rev., bare head of Mark Antony right, 9.79g, die axis 12.00 (Sofaer 43; RPC 4771), very fine [Ex St. Mary’s College, Oscott]. This coin type is dated twice, as year 21 of Cleopatra’s reign in Egypt and year 6 of her Phoenician era, both of which equate to 32-31 BC. Mark Antony gave Chalcis ad Libanum to Cleopatra in 36 BC; and after their deaths Octavian granted it to Herod the Great.
