Description

Sicily, Syracuse, Agathokles (317-289 BC), electrum 50 litrai, laureate head of Apollo left; behind, Thessalian helmet, rev., ΣΥΡΑΚ-ΟΣΙΩΝ, tripod, 3.71g, die axis 7.00 (Jenkins ―; cf. SNG ANS 621 ff), extremely fine, apparently an unrecorded variety. From dies unrecorded by Jenkins and of additional interest in that the reverse ethnic starts at the lower left and ends at the lower right, contrary to virtually all the examples listed by Jenkins where the legend runs from top right to top left. Jenkins R42 (unillustrated but SNG Lloyd 1434) has the ethnic arrangement as the present coin but includes the letter Π within the tripod, not present here.

Estimate: GBP 1500 - 2000
