Description

★ From the Susiana Hoard of 1965 (IGCH 1806) ★

KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 32 mm, 16.62 g, 1 h), Phaselis, CY 11 = 208/7 BC. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; to left, IA above Φ; below throne, countermark: radiate facing bust of Helios within round incuse. Price 2849. Heipp-Tamer 228.2 (V22/R68) = P. Strauss: Un trésor de monnaies hellénistiques trouvé près de Suse, RN 1971, p. 121 and pl. XIX, 157 ( this coin ). With a rare and interesting countermark. Minor flatness from countermarking on the obverse and with a light graffito on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.

From an old Swiss collection, formed in the 1970s, privately purchased from Münzen & Medaillen (with original ticket) and from the Susiana Hoard of 1965 (IGCH 1806).
