Description

CRUSADERS. Antioch. Roger of Salerno, regent, 1112-1119. Follis (Bronze, 22 mm, 4.85 g, 1 h). O-A (in monogram form) [ΓEωP] St. George, nimbate, on horseback to right, spearing down dragon. Rev. POΓ3ЄP / ΠΡΙΓΚΠ/OC ANTI in four lines. Malloy 9. Metcalf 98. Porteous 21. Double struck, otherwise, good very fine.

From a collection of Arab-Byzantine and Crusader coins, formed in the 1990s.

The obverse inscription O-A ΓEωP stands for AΓΙΟC ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟC, 'Saint George,' who was among the most popular saints worshipped by the Crusaders.
