Description

★ A sharp and attractive piece of fine style ★

SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.34 g, 7 h), circa 450-440. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and the reins in both; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses; in exergue, ketos to right. Rev. ΣYRAKOΣI-ON Diademed head of Arethusa to right, wearing pendant earring and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 571 (V287/R391). Jameson 769 ( same dies ). SNG ANS 184 ( same dies ). A sharp and attractive piece of fine style. Very minor flatness and light pitting on the reverse, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From the Maggiore Collection, formed in the late 1970s to early 2000s.
