Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I , 405-367 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 16.82 g, 1 h), unsigned dies in the style of Eukleidas, circa 405-400. Charioteer driving quadriga galloping to left, holding the reins with his left hand and kentron in his right; above, Nike flying right, crowning the charioteer with a wreath; in exergue, dolphin swimming left. Rev. ΣΥΡAKOΣI[ΩN] Head of Arethusa to left, her hair bound with sphendone over which several tresses fly back; she wears a double hook earring and a plain necklace; around, three dolphins swimming downwards, one upwards. SNG ANS 296 ( same dies ). SNG Lloyd 1404 ( same dies ). Tudeer 92 ( same dies ). Beautifully toned and of excellent style. The obverse struck from the usual worn die , otherwise, good very fine.
