Description

★ A very rare 'Steg-Rinnenprägung' quinarius ★

CELTIC, Central Europe. Uncertain tribe. 1st century BC. Quinarius (Silver, 15 mm, 1.76 g, 12 h), 'Steg-Rinnenprägung' type. Back of a human head to right within semicircle; to left, straight horizontal line above nine pellets. Rev. Winged ‘bird-man’ to left, holding a torque with both hands; crescents, legs, wheel and a 'test cut' behind. Flesche 406 var. (differing reverse). Keller, JNG XXXVI (1986), p. 13ff. and pl. 1. A very rare variety. Nicely toned and unusually sharp and clear for the issue. Good very fine.

From an important collection of Central European Celtic coins.

This issue is derived from the 'Nauheim type' and it is unusual in that it was mostly overstruck on earlier quinarii using a fixation technique that creates the impression of a test cut on the reverse.
