★ Recovy of the lost legionary eagles ★

Augustus, 27 BC-AD 14. Denarius (Silver, 17 mm, 3.78 g, 10 h), Rome, P. Petronius Turpilianus, moneyer, 19 BC. TVRPILIANVS III•VIR / FE - RON Diademed and draped bust of Feronia to right, wearing pearl-necklace. Rev. CAESAR AVGVSTVS SIGN RECE Parthian kneeling to right, presenting signum with X-marked vexillum attached. BMC 14. Cohen 484. RIC 288. A beautifully toned example. Minor roughness , otherwise, good very fine.

This type commemorates Augustus' diplomatic success in securing the restoration of the legionary eagles which had been lost by Crassus and Antony in the disastrous campaigns of 53 and 36 BC.
