★ An exceptional facing portrait of Perikles ★

DYNASTS OF LYCIA. Perikles, circa 380-360 BC. 1/3 Stater (Silver, 15 mm, 3.11 g). Laureate and draped bust of Perikles facing slightly to left, drapery around neck. Rev. 𐊓𐊁-𐊕𐊆-[𐊋𐊍𐊁] ('Perikle' in Lycian) Triskeles. Falghera 216. Müseler VIII, 40 (same dies). Podalia -. Rauch 134 (2015), 134 (same dies). Very rare and among the finest known. A magnificent example with a portrait of exceptional beauty, perfectly centered on a broad flan. Good extremely fine.

The portraits on coins of the Lycian dynasts are not only among the earliest, but also among the finest renderings of rulers in classic numismatic art. This is an exceptional example and certainly among the finest portrait coins of Perikles known.
