★ An exceptional tetradrachm of Audoleon ★

KINGS OF PAEONIA. Audoleon, circa 315-286 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.25 g, 4 h), in the name and types of Alexander III, Astibus or Damastion, circa 300-286. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; to left, thunderbolt. NAC 97 (2016), 276 = Gorny & Mosch 211 (2013), 207 = Lanz 123 (2005), 157. Price -. Waggoner, Further reflections on Audoleon and his Alexander mint, RBN 129 (1983), -, cf. 25 ( same obverse die ). Apparently the second and by far the best example of this variety known, and from a hitherto unattested reverse die. An exceptional example, sharply struck from fresh dies and with magnificent surfaces. Virtually as struck.
