Description

★ An extremely fine tetradrachm of Alexander III ★

KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.17 g, 11 h), Amphipolis, struck by Kassander, as regent or as King, circa 307-297. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; to left, Λ above torch; below throne, monogram of HΓ. Price 445. Well struck and very nicely toned. Good extremely fine.

From a German collection, assembled since the 1960s.

The reverse of this coin has two interesting and unusual minor details: the flame of the torch is burning to the right rather than to the left, and the P in the legend is retrograde.
