Description

CELTIC, Central Europe. Helvetii. Mid 1st century BC. Quinarius (Silver, 13 mm, 1.68 g). Head devolved into a whirl. Rev. IΛΛVI Horse prancing left; above, pellet in circle. Dembski 432 var. (differing legend). D&T -. LT -. Cf. SLM 943-945 (for obverse) and 950 ff. var. (for reverse, but with differing legends). An apparently unpublished variety of a very rare type. Gently toned and very well struck from fresh dies. The obverse struck very slightly off center, otherwise, virtually as struck.

From the Helvetii Collection, formed in the 1970s and 1980s.

The legend on our coin is clearly different from that of Dembski 432, which is hard to read but similar to the piece in Hess-Divo 305 (2006), 9, ending on [...]VNI.
