Description

★ An extremely rare stater from the Helvetii ★

CELTIC, Central Europe. Helvetii. Late 2nd-early 1st century BC. Scyphate Stater (Electrum, 22 mm, 6.88 g, 3 h). Celticized head of Apollo with curly hair to right. Rev. Celticized charioteer driving biga to right; below, sword to right. Allen -. D&T 3085 ( same reverse die ). LT -. SLM -. Extremely rare and unusually complete, an exceptional example. Good very fine.

This variety, with the sword symbol on the reverse, is among the rarest staters issued by the Helvetii. Delestrée and Tache only cite the Paris example, which is not only weakly struck but also heavily worn.
