Description

★ An interesting imitation of Gaius Publilius, Quaes ★

CELTIC, Lower Danube. Uncertain tribe . 1st century BC. Bronze (19 mm, 6.90 g, 1 h), imitating Gaius Publilius, Quaestor. Helmeted head of Athena to right. Rev. [Γ]ΑΙΟΥ ΤΑΜΙΟΥ (retrograde) Bull grazing left; below, imitative monogram. Cf. AMNG III, 210 and SNG Copenhagen 1323 (for prototype). Very fine.

This is an interesting imitation, struck from a retrograde engraved reverse die. For a similar example, see the following lot.
