Description

MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC). AR tetradrachm (25mm, 15.51 gm, 10h). XF. Late lifetime or early posthumous issue of Tyre, by Laomedon, struck under Menes, dated Regnal Year 26 of Azemilkos (322/1 BC). Head of Heracles right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck / AΛEΞANΔOY (N retrograde), Zeus seated left on backless throne, right leg drawn back, feet suspended, eagle in right hand, scepter in left; ЧO (Phoenician for Azemilkos) above ||| ||| (date) in left field. Price 3265 (Ake). Note - there are some anomalies on this coin which lead one to conclude it might be a product of an unofficial mint. The civic date should be written as ЧO above ||| ||| // and the legend is partially retrograde and missing the letter P. Also, although the style is quite similar to the official products of the Ake mint, it is still different enough to be remarkable.
