Carolingian. Charles the Simple (898-922) Denier ND (after 911) VF35 NGC, Cologne mint, Rob-1714var (spelling of REX), MEC I-999var (listed as after 911; same), Dep-347var (same), MG-1352var (same). 20mm. 1.82gm. +KVROLVS VEX (S sideways), cross pattee with pellet in each angle / S (with bar) | COLONIΛ | A. A rather difficult issue and the first of the type we have been able to locate coming to auction in recent decades, the reverse clearly harkening to the types of Louis the Child--the last Carolingian king of East Francia--and presumably struck after his death in 911, when Charles would have been pressing his claim to Lotharingia. Rather well struck on the obverse, the reverse a bit shallower and clearly made from a disintegrating die. Sold with old collector's envelope. From the Morris Collection
