Carolingian. Louis the Pious (814-840) Denier ND (818-822/3) MS62 NGC, Venice mint, Class 2, Rob-1158, MEC I-789, MG-456, Dep-1116D. 19mm. 1.63gm. +HLVDOVVICVS IMP (MP ligate), cross pattee / +VEN | ECIAS in two lines. Certainly among the most desirable and aesthetically pleasing of Louis's issues, after his portrait coinage, this stunning mint name-in-field type ticks all the right boxes. The surfaces are profuse with die polish lines, the lettering razor-sharp, and the strike perfectly positioned on a nice flan. It is notoriously difficult to procure any of Louis's early coinage in Mint State, let alone so nearly choice, with the last example of this type we offered, an AU55, achieving $1410 in our January 2015 New York Auction #3037 (lot 30265).
