Carolingian. Charlemagne (768-814) Denier ND (771-793) AU58 NGC, Melle mint, Class 2, Rob-896, MEC I-728, MG-268var (arrangement of mint name), Dep-605var (same), Kluge-136var (same). 19mm. 1.37gm. CARo | LVS (AR ligate) / MEDOLVS highly ligatured around lozenge-like cross. Exceptionally handsome for this pre-reform type, the odd arrangement of the mint name still bearing some affinity to Charlemagne's Class 1 coinage, while the king's name appears carefully formed and well-proportioned. Among the nicest of the issue we have seen, with an AU53 from the same mint (arranged in a slightly different manner) bringing $4465 in our August 2015 ANA Platinum Night auction 3041 (lot 32184). Sold with old collector's envelope. From the Morris Collection
