Japan Bank of Japan 5 Yen 1899 (Meiji Yr 32) Pick 31a JNDA 11-32 PMG Choice Uncirculated 64. A high grade example from the first year of issue (vertically dated Meiji Year 32 on the back). These early 5 yen notes are scarce in high grades, with only four examples achieving an uncirculated grade in the PMG Population report. Featured on this front is the portrait of legendary hero and god Takeuchi no Sukune and a background vignette of the Ube shrine in Tottori. The exchange clause of "promise to pay the bearer on demand 5 yen in gold" is seen on back. Highly desirable in this well preserved condition.
