Description

Japan Greater Japan Imperial National Bank, Tokyo #15 10 Yen ND (1873) Pick 13 JNDA 11-11 PMG Very Fine 20. This very rare note is one of the irreplaceable highlights of Yuri Solovey's collection. This Tokyo Branch #15 10 yen from the 1873 Convertible Issue is the single graded example in the PMG Population Report. This denomination represented a huge sum of money at the time and the physical gold coin was preferred at this larger denomination level. Additionally, the convertibility of these notes was short-lived and were eventually replace by the 1877 to 1878 unconvertible issues. The front design features of this 10 yen include two vignettes depicting Gagaku, the ancient imperial court music and dancing. The bank location of "Tokyo" is seen in the frame at center with the region listed directly above and the bank branch identification listed below. The back design features a large vignette depicting the legendary Empress Jingu (circa 200 A.D.) riding into battle and the vignette is flanked by the 1870 gold coin that represented the convertibility of the note. Although minor repairs and splits are present, the overall appearance and preservation of this 10 yen remain highly desirable, especially at this rarity level. From the Yuri Solovey Collection of Japan and Territories
