Description

Kwangtung. Kuang-hsü 10 Cents (7-3/10 Candareens) ND (1889) MS62 NGC, Kwangtung mint, KM-Y195, L&M-126, Kann-19, WS-0934, Wenchao-555 (rarity 3 stars). Denomination written as 7 3/10 CANDAREENS. An extremely rare first-year issue from what would become the gold-standard in late imperial Chinese coin design, the example at hand immediately strikes the viewer with a remarkably imposing gravity for its small size. Struck with needle-sharp precision throughout, even to the point of the obverse rim appearing slightly raised, the devices exude a feel that very much keeps in-line with the fact that these early milled Kwangtung pieces were produced from dies manufactured in Birmingham, while the surfaces have aged softly somewhere between graphite and salt-gray with a notable admixture of golden-champagne backlight. The center of the reverse emerges as slightly more mottled, especially around the characters, while an almost cupric red ring of tone lines the peripheries, without a trace of weakness anywhere in the design. Presently tied for second finest of this circulation series across both NGC and PCGS combined--and tied for the finest Mint State example certified by PCGS--this gorgeous coin kickstarts a four-piece set of phenomenal 1889 Kwangtung coinage stretching through to the Dollar, which stands poised to pique the interests of even the most seasoned connoisseurs of the Chinese series.
