Li Huang Chang silvered bronze Medal 1896 MS64 PCGS, L&M-935, Wurzbach-5175. 40mm. A very rare German-produced medal produced to commemorate the visit of Chinese politician, general, diplomat, and Viceroy of the Chihli Province Li Huang Chang (Li Hongzhang) to Hamburg. Know for both his success in the suppression of the Taiping Rebellion and well as his failures in supporting Russia against the Japanese, he served as a pioneer of the Chinese military as well as leading its industrial modernization. Still fully watery with soft champagne backlight and mottled russet tone that collects around the characters, this example appears fully covetable and serves as an intriguing convergence between historical interest and aesthetic beauty.
