Description

L. Cossutius C.f. Sabula (ca. 74/72 BC). AR denarius (17mm, 7h). NGC VF. Rome. SABVLA, head of Medusa left, winged and entwined with serpents / L•COSSVTI•C•F, Bellerophon riding Pegasus right, hurling spear; XI behind. Crawford 395/1. Sydenham 790. Cossutia 1. Nothing is known of the moneyer or his family history other than that he was equestrian, and not senatorial, rank. The types of Medusa and Bellerophon suggest some relation with Corinth, and perhaps an ancestor filled a position in Greece, but this is purely conjecture. The issue was not large, with XXXXII being the highest die-number, and the coins are relatively scarce today.
