PAMPHYLIA. Perga. Ca. 221-188 BC. AR/AE fourrée tetradrachm (30mm, 15.18 gm, 11h). NGC MS 5/5 - 4/5. Ancient forgery, in the names and types of Alexander III the Great of Macedon, dated Civic Year 25 (197/6 BC). Head of Heracles right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck / ΛΛΕΞΛIIΔΡΟΥ (Y inverted), Zeus seated left on backless throne, right leg drawn back, feet on ground line, eagle in right hand, scepter in left; KE (date) in left field. Cf. Price 2939 for official issue. An intriguing and quite convincing contemporary forgery of the ubiquitous broad-flan Alexander issues of Asia Minor, detectable by virtue of the significantly reduced weight (an official tetradrachm should weigh 16-17 grams) and blundered legend.
