Description

BRITAIN. Durotriges. Ca. 65 BC-AD 45. BI stater (20mm, 4.52 gm, 7h). NGC MS 4/5 - 4/5. Devolved head of Apollo right / Disjointed horse right, pellets above and below. SCBC 366. Van Arsdell 1235-1. ABC 2157. Ex Winterborne Stickland Hoard (PAS WILT-DF1BB7). Discovered in summer 2013 by two avid metal detectorists, the Winterbourne Stickland hoard is a rare Iron Age Hoard found in the county of Dorset, South West England, close to Maiden Castle, which was thought to be the capital of the Durotriges. The Durotriges were well known for their continental trade and hill forts. They were the only tribe who did not add inscriptions to their coins, perhaps indicative of decentralized rule among multiple hill-fort based tribes using a common currency, and the only tribe to strike a stater in silver. The Cranbourne Chase stater evolved from a 4th Century BC Macedonian gold stater and was introduced around 60 BC and gradually debased until it disappeared around the time of the Claudian invasion in 43 AD.
