Description

Madura Island. Sumenep Counterstamped 1/2 Real Batu ND (c. 1820) Good Details (Graffiti) NGC, KM196.2var (with additional "Sumenep" stamp), cf. KM40a (for host). Displaying "Sumenep" and 5-petalled flower counterstamps (Fine Standard) on a Philip V 4 Reales 1730 Mo-R of Mexico. An intriguing if well-worn specimen, seemingly a bit harshly graded for the detail in preserves on the Spanish arms and the full date, mintmark, and assayer's initial, and notably seldom encountered in the marketplace. The graffiti on the reverse appears to be part of a name or initials. From the Seki Collection
