George III "Northumberland" Shilling 1763 AU53 PCGS, KM597, S-3742. A popular and rare shilling date, purportedly around only 2,000 struck in accordance with order of the Earl of Northumberland that £100 worth of the denomination be minted for distribution upon his appointment as Lord Lieutenant. The present selection preserves a beautiful originality to the strike, none of usual weakness or shallowness of George III's coinage seen, and a minor champagne light mingling with rich argent fields. Ex. Spink July 1971 (comes with old auction tag)
