Perhaps one of the most iconic English silver coinage in the period between the introduction of the penny and Queen Victoria's iconic Gothic florins, the piece at hand represents the first large-size denomination minted alongside the more ubiquitous penny--the only denomination minted throughout Europe since the 8th century. Likely in response to increasing continental wealth from the crusades and his rival Louis IX of France's (St. Louis) monetary reform introducing the Gros around the same time, this groat of 4 pence, though ultimately unsuccessful, proved influential into the Stuart Period. Though well-worn, the current offering preserves good legibility to the legends and evinces no signs of use in jewelry--as do so many examples of the type--whatsoever, and the whole of the flan is remarkable unbent, likely a metal-detecting find. An exciting historical issue sure to pique collector interest. Mislabeled on the holder as Variety F, Fox 2 (quatrefoil of three lines).
