Description

Kings of Wessex. Edward the Elder (899-924) Penny ND AU55 PCGS, No mint, Grimald as moneyer, Two-Line type, S-1087, N-649. +EADVVEARD REX, small cross pattee / GRIMǷ | ALD MO in two lines separated by a row of 3 crosses; group of 3 pellets above and below. Almost certainly among the finest surviving examples of the type, struck on a fully argent flan with luminous russet tone and a nearly full beaded border, no discernable wave to the flan and not a crack in the flan. On etymological grounds, the legends present an intriguing case for the inclusion of what looks to be an extra wynn in the moneyer's name after the M, though the same sound is represented by a double VV in Edward's name. Ex. Stack's Bowers ANA Auction, 14 August 2018, Lot 21004; John Whitney Walter Collection; Stack's Public Auction, 7-8 December 1989, Lot 2628 (comes with auction tag)
