Lazareto. Leper Colony copper 50 Centavos 1901 MS62 Brown NGC, KM-L5a. A general and conditional rarity to be sure, this extremely scarce coinage is seldom found in presentable grades due to its exclusive production for use in the Lazareto leprosariums and normally high levels of circulation. Of the three principal metallic varieties for the issue--brass, copper, and copper-nickel--the copper striking has by far the lowest mintage figure, with only a handful known and this near-choice specimen being the finest of only three certified at either NGC or PCGS.
