Description

Portuguese Colony. João Prince Regent 2 Macutas 1815 VF Details (Obverse Tooled) NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint, KM47, Russo-470. Overstruck on an Angolan Macuta of Maria I & Pedro III (cf. KM20). An incredibly rare type to find without the shield re-tariff counterstamp of 1837, this large issue was produced in Brazil specifically to circulate throughout the Portuguese crown's territories in Africa. While some effort has been made to strengthen the obverse arms, the overall natural of the strike still proves quite exceptional for the type, with central weakness kept to a minimum and the whole of the design well intact. For comparison, we sold an uncertified, lacquered example for $2070 in our 2011 New York Auction #3012 (Lot 23273).
