Description

BITHYNIA, Heraclea. Ca. late 3rd century BC. AR tetradrachm (35mm, 16.98 gm, 12h). NGC AU 4/5 - 4/5. Dated Year 2 (220/19 BC). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Head of Heracles wearing lion-skin headdress, paws tied before neck / AΛEΞANΔPOY, Zeus enthroned left, right leg drawn back, feet on stool, eagle in right hand, long scepter in left; B in left field, K on front throne leg, X on back throne leg, club left in exergue. Price 1298 variety (Price lists an additional N-based monogram in the left field), club left in exergue. Rare. Scratches in right reverse field noted for accuracy. The letters which appear on the legs of the throne are quite interesting and something this cataloger has not seen on any other issue. Is it possible that this is the signature of the die creator?
