Greek Italy. Southern Apulia, Tarentum. AR Half Shekel, c. 212-209 BC. D/ Helmeted and cuirassed rider right, holding filleted palm branch; below, ΣΩKAN-NAΣ. R/ Phalantos riding dolphin left, holding trident and kantharos; to right, eagle with open wings, below, TAPAΣ. HN Italy 1082. Vlasto 984. AR. g. 3.52 mm. 19.00 R. Rare and superb. Lovely old cabinet tone. About EF. The final period of Tarentum silver coinage follows a significant reform. The nomos is abandoned and is replaced by a Punic half-shekel, with quarter-shekels replacing the drachms.
