RIC VI Rome 360
Ex. Solidus Numismatik Auction 23, Lot 703.
This type was issued only in Rome, to celebrate the valour of the Gallic legions in Constantine’s victory over Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312. Collectors sometimes seek out the much later RIC 21 to mark the battle, but that type’s relation to the famous historic event is very tenuous. This rare type, issued in Rome immediately following the battle, is by far the best numismatic connection to it, and this is a magnificent example.
