★ “Of the new god” ★
MYSIA, Kyzikos: Uncertain emperor (Augustus, Caligula, or Claudius), 1st century CE. 2.48g, 15mm.
Obv: NEOY ΘEOY; bare head right.
Rev: K - Y / Z - I, Capricorn leaping right, head reverted.
RPC I 2247; SNG France 626.
From the Justin Lee collection.
Very interesting reverse legend, “Of the new god” in association with a portrait of the emperor. Depending on which emperor issued this coin, this could be related to the incipient cult of Augustus (really of his Genius), the godhead of Caligula, or these traditions as inherited by Claudius.
