Description

MACEDON UNDER ROMAN PROTECTORATE, First Meris c.167-148 BCE, AR Tetradrachm. Amphipolis, 16.39g, 30mm.
Obv: Diademed and draped bust of Artemis right, with bow and quiver over shoulder; all in centre of Macedonian shield.
Rev: MAKEΔONΩN / ΠPΩTHΣ; Club; monogram above, two monograms below; all within oak wreath; thunderbolt to left.
SNG Copenhagen 1314-15; HGC 3.1, 1103.
From the Tiberius Collection.
Although this coin was struck under Roman authority after the defeat of Perseus by Aemilius Paullus in the Third Macedonian War, it contains no trace of Roman influence, perhaps to help foster the illusion that Rome had restored freedom to Macedon’s citizens, having “liberated" them from a tyrant king.
