Description

SICILY, Akragas, c. 450-440 BCE, AE Cast Tetras. 11.8g, 19mm (height).
Obv: Two eagle foreparts back-to-back.
Rev: Crab. Base: Three pellets (mark of value).
CNS 6; HGC 2, 127.
At this point in its history, Akragas was a flourishing city state. This wouldn't last much longer; in 406 BCE it was sacked by the Carthagineans and never regained its former splendour.
