Lucius Verus, AD 161-169. AE Medallion. (38 mm. 46,18 g.). AD 165, Rome. L AVREL VERVS AVG ARMENIACVS IMP II TR P V COS III, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust left. Rev. Victory standing left, head right, holding palm in right hand, left hand extended to trophy, two captive Armenians or Parthians, one standing and one seated, at foot of trophy. COS date var of Banti 199, Gnecchi 30, Boston MFA 35.1465 (COS II). Possibly unpublished with COS III. Extremely Rare. An exceptional and attractive medallion of two sestertii with a fine, dark green patina, a powerful military bust and a noble portrait of the emperor seen from behind. A special propagandistic reverse commemorating the successful military campagn against the Parthians into Armenia and lower Mesopotamia, Parthian wars 161-166 AD. The romans even sacked Ctesiphon, the Parthian capital. The Armenia became a Roman province and as readable on the obverse legend of this medallion Lucius Verus added the title ARMENIACVS.
